ABOUT SOGHA

Advancing the Rights and Opportunities of Somali Girls

Somali Girls Hope Association (SOGHA) is a non-profit, non-governmental Somali civil society organization dedicated exclusively to advancing the rights, protection, education, health, empowerment and meaningful participation of Somali girls and young women.

OUR STORY

Who We Are

SOGHA was established in Mogadishu, Somalia in 2018 to support Somali girls and young women to grow up in safe and supportive environments, access quality education and essential services, understand and exercise their rights, develop their skills and potential, participate in decisions affecting their lives, and contribute meaningfully to Somalia’s development.

SOGHA recognizes that girls experience multiple and interconnected barriers, including limited access to education and health services, violence, harmful practices, early and forced marriage, exploitation, child labour, domestic work, discrimination, harassment, poverty, insecurity, limited economic opportunities, inadequate knowledge of rights and laws, and limited opportunities for leadership and participation.

VALUES & CULTURE

The Principles Behind Our Work

Our values guide how we work with girls, communities and partners.

01

Girl-Centered

Girls’ needs, experiences, safety, dignity and aspirations are at the center of SOGHA’s work.

02

Rights & Dignity

Every girl is entitled to dignity, equality, protection and opportunities without discrimination.

03

Do No Harm

All programs must protect girls from further harm, exploitation, discrimination and unintended negative consequences.

04

Inclusion

SOGHA seeks to ensure that girls facing additional barriers are not left behind.

05

Meaningful Participation

Girls should not only be beneficiaries; they should have opportunities to express their views and participate in decisions affecting them.

06

Accountability

SOGHA is accountable to girls, communities, partners, donors and relevant authorities.

07

Local Leadership

SOGHA promotes Somali-led solutions and strengthens the capacity of local institutions and communities.

08

Partnership

SOGHA works with government, civil society, communities, international organizations, private-sector actors and girls themselves.
